Are you someone who can't possibly give to charity without the assistance of an entire industry? How much of your donation are you sacrificing for the few seconds that this faceless industry deals with you?

The simple and true guide is that most of the money you give through a telemarketer (and a large majority of it at that) or any professional fundraising enterprise, DOESN'T go to charity. It goes to the professional fundraising operation. 60% and 70% are typical proportions. There is no argument here that it doesn't cost a lot to organise fundraising operations where money must go to prizes, remuneration of fundraising professionals and their staff as well as the profits and commissions that serve as an incentive to raise money for charitable non-profit groups. Also, of that 30-40% proportion that returns to the charity some or most of it may go to administrative services at head office rather than say your local facilities. You may heartily approve of that or you may not even know it because you were mislead by the telesales operator. Again there is no argument that administrative staff are not needed to run organisations and that such staff may include marketing specialists and public relations staff. The concern however is when a supporter of these raffles is deliberately left in the dark about these details. It is as if people behind the raffles have such little confidence in the effectiveness of these fundraising strategies that they feel compelled to conduct them under a cloak of secrecy and deceit.
